About Southern Epic
In order to understand what we aim to bring to the table at Southern Epic we fist have to explain our outlook and approach to photography.
Our approach is very much aimed towards the “fine art” enthusiast who is not looking to produce postcard images for FB or Instagram, but rather someone who is looking for something that’s lasting and highly personal without the commercial attachment to his or her work.
In order for something to be classified as “fine art” its only purpose has to be itself”.
This means it must not be produced with any intent other than just being art. This does not mean it cannot be shared on social platforms, or sold to a buyer, but the effort going into producing these unique images is a highly personal effort that cannot be duplicated by another individual with the same camera settings or equipment.
Photographers who attend a workshop or Tour with S.E must aspire to produce something truly unique by having an impressionistic approach to their work. This can be achieved by the way you actually produce the work out in the field, or by means of post-production in order to put on paper what you envisioned.
We are strong believers of putting work on paper long before images even come close to the internet, as this is where true art belongs.. a tangible piece of artwork that can be held with your own hands and hung on a wall.
The Southern Epic slogan is E X P L O R E, C A P T U R E, S H A R E
Here is what we mean by this..

Every photographic tour must have some element of exploration in order to keep it organic. If one simply drives to the photographic “hot-spots” there is no real effort in producing unique pieces of art, but rather like a heard of Wildebeest all taking the same migratory rout to produce the same images.
Southern Epic’s approach is to explore an area together with the guests and host photographers to find unique and stunning scenes worth capturing. This is also why 95% of our tours are self-drive tours where the guests will be in full control of their own travel logistics. This usually involves some type of camping scenario where we can be at one with nature.
*Camping locations and bookings will al be facilitated by S.E. and be included in the fees.
Because we aim to explore the wilderness and “off the beaten track” places, a 4 x 4 is a must. Our trips are all based on an Over-land approach, and not a 4 x 4 endurance safari.
A 4 x 4 allows us to explore the dirt roads and occasionally cross a river or stream if need be.
Over-land vehicles should include the following:
*”City 4 x 4’s” are not ideally suited for these conditions even though we will not be doing any hard and extreme off driving. Please give us a call to check if your vehicle is suited for the terrain before you confirm your booking.
*Each vehicle and its occupants must be fully self-sustaining for the duration of any S.E tour. Details for each tour and region will be provided so you can ensure that you are ready for the terrain and camping logistics.

The capture part of our slogan is pretty obvious as this includes the actual taking of photographs, and the production of special works of art out in the field. S.E will give guidance in terms of special techniques and applications to make sure every capture is truly unique. We make use of hand stained filters on location that will be provided to each guest in order to produce in-camera special effects. This part of our tour offering is very creative and we hope to explore and share creative ways of producing never to be repeated pieces of photographic art.

There is no point in producing fine art images if they are not printed and shared with the people around you who actually care about your work. This does not refer to the hundreds of FB followers who randomly LIKE images on your FB page, but rather the family and friends who spend time at your home or office. Fine art photographs must be printed and framed, and part of our tour offering includes 3 x printed and framed pieces of your choice.
Southern Epic will help you to curate a selection of 3 images, and also consult with regards to prepping the work for printing. S.E will deal with all the printing and framing logistics, and have your finished artwork delivered to your doorstep upon completion.
S.E is owned by fine art photographer Hendre’ Louw who will also be the primary host on each tour, but a decision has been made early on some of the tours a guest host will also be joining the group to help expand the groups creative vision and inspire. Once each guest is set-up and ready to produce their own unique images at a particular scene, the hosts will also join in and produce their own unique images. Guests are very welcome to look over their shoulders and ask away as this forms part of the teaching process.
Guest hosts will be confirmed for each individual tour where applicable.
